Project Overview
The CN Tower Gift Shop is the only gift shop in one of Canada’s most famous and easily recognizable landmarks, the CN Tower. SGi Lighting created an exciting custom feature lighting installation, winning the job over several other suppliers. CN Tower chose SGi because of our creativity and ability to deliver a technical design with simplicity. The design goal was to have the lighting feature match seamlessly with the existing “City Grid” installation in the gift shop, which meant a lot of geometric and unique shapes.
In order to meet this design goal, SGi created 15 unique “Pods” with differing configurations, with each Pod consisting of at least 20 meters of DMXPixel 4.57 Watt LED Flex Light and controlled independently with DMXPixel decoders. That’s a total of 300 meters of light controlled with 15 unique DMXPixel decoders and 60 power supplies.
SGi was very involved with the installation process, making several nighttime trips after store hours to ensure all Pods were running properly and programmed to display custom designed lighting scenes – like Aurora Borealis, Canada Day, Christmas and many more. SGi personnel created life size drawings of the Pods which were laid on the ground and then lasered onto the ceiling to ensure they would be appropriately arranged to the existing support structures. SGi worked closely alongside the electrical contractors, design, and structural teams to commission this project and ensure the handoff was seamless.
Delivering projects and products on time and on budget is important to SGi, and we were one of the few vendors on the project that was able to meet these goals.
This lighting feature has been installed in the CN Tower Gift Shop since January 2020.

Design Considerations & Client Preferences
LED Feature Lighting
The CN Tower Gift Shop needed a dynamic and eye catching lighting installation that would complement their existing city grid installation. The client requested lights that would evoke the look of the Aurora Borealis, fading in and out in stunning colours of blue, green, purple and pink. The lights needed to be bright enough to be an eye-catching feature, but not too bright that the changing colours would distract from the retail displays.
SGi Recommendations
We recommended our DMXPixel 4.57 Watt LED Flex Lights. Each board in DMXPixel 4.57 Watt can be independently programmed and controlled, so the dazzling flow of colours imitating the Aurora Borealis could play across all Pods at different times, in different directions and at different speeds. DMXPixel 4.57 Watt offers a level of illumination that is just right – not too bright, and not too dim.
